Sean Neary
Recipient of the:
2005 Ray Downey Courage and Valor Award
On April 27, 2006 at the annual Fire Department Instructors Conference
(FDIC) in Indianapolis, Sean Neary was bestowed the prestigious Ray Downey
Courage and Valor Award. The Ray Downey Courage and Valor Award
commemorates the life and career achievements of Deputy Chief Ray Downey who
gave his life commanding rescue operations in the Word Trade Center attack
September 11, 2001. Chief Downey was Chief of Rescue Operations and a 39
year veteran of The Fire Department of New York City. He was the most highly
decorated fire fighter in the history of the FDNY being recognized 21 times
for valor while performing his duties.
This award is presented to one extraordinarily courageous American
Firefighter each year. Firefighter Neary displayed extreme courage and

extremely dangerous situation during a trench rescue. His actions
resulted in the successful rescue of one victim.
